Adaptation to Climate Change: Perspectives from Mountain Villages and International Organizations
We are pleased to invite you to a guest lecture by Professor Ben Orlove from Columbia University entitled:
“Adaptation to Climate Change: Perspectives from Mountain Villages and International Organizations”
The lecture will take place on 21 May 2026 at 13:45, room 101.
Professor Ben Orlove is a Professor at the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University, a Faculty Member of the Columbia Climate School, and a Senior Research Scientist at the International Research Institute for Climate and Society.
In his lecture, Professor Orlove will draw on decades of firsthand observation of climate change, ranging from mountain communities confronting glacier retreat to the conference centers of international organizations addressing climate change at a global scale. The talk will highlight a striking contrast between the creativity of local responses and the narrow reliance of international organizations on technical solutions. It will also offer broader reflections on the strengths, weaknesses and tensions of the current landscape of climate action, in which local, national and global efforts remain only incompletely connected.
Ben Orlove is an anthropologist trained at Harvard University and the University of California, Berkeley. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in the Peruvian Andes, as well as significant research in the Italian Alps, the western United States, and Central and East Africa. He has published widely on political economy, climate adaptation, agrarian history and Indigenous Peoples. He served as a Lead Author on two reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and represented NGOs at meetings of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has received a Presidential Award from the American Anthropological Association for his work on climate change.
We warmly invite everyone interested in climate change, adaptation, climate policy, international organizations, and the relationship between local knowledge and global environmental governance.
Participation in the lecture is possible only upon prior registration. Registration is a necessary condition for attending the event. The registration form is available here:
