The rhetoric and reality of digital agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa

We are pleased to invite you to a lecture by Prof. Matthew Schnurr entitled The rhetoric and reality of digital agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa, to be held on May 20, 2025, at 1:45 PM, in Room 101 at the Institute of International and Security Studies.

Prof. Matthew Schnurr specializes in environmental politics, agricultural biotechnology, and development studies. He is Professor and Chair of International Development Studies at Dalhousie University and holds a PhD in Geography from the University of British Columbia.

His research focuses on the political ecology of agricultural innovation, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. He has led multi-country projects on genetically modified crops, digital agriculture, and the social implications of new technologies for smallholder farmers.

Recent publications include Digital agriculture will perpetuate injustice unless led from the grassroots (2025), Citizens as consumers: styles of reasoning about agricultural biotechnologies and publics (2025), and The gendered value chain of matooke banana in Uganda (2024).
