We are pleased to announce that on Friday, 23 January 2026, Bastian K\u00fcntzel<\/a> has defended his PhD thesis entitled “From Openness to Closure: the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Transnational Identity at the Polish-German Border.”
The dissertation was conducted within the framework of a cotutelle agreement between the University of Wroclaw<\/a>, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Technische Universit\u00e4t Chemnitz<\/a>, under joint supervision of Prof. Stefan Garsztecki (TU Chemnitz) and prof. Aleksandra Maatsch (UWr).
Congratulations to Bastian on reaching this important milestone and many thanks to all colleagues (from UWr WNS & TU Chemnitz) involved in this truly transnational doctoral project!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University of Wroc\u0142aw participates in the HORIZON project \u201cDigital Transformation for Building Democratic Resilience,\u201d<\/strong> which has reached the Grant Agreement Preparation stage under the EU Funding & Tenders Portal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is coordinated by Prof. David Ramiro Troiti<\/strong>\u00f1o<\/strong> (Tallinn University of Technology). The University of Wroc\u0142aw (prof. Aleksandra Maatsch, Jean Monnet Chair at the Faculty of Social Sciences) leads Work Package 2: Comparative Research<\/strong>, implemented in cooperation with prof. Anna Pacze\u015bniak (professor of political science, Faculty of Social Sciences) as well as partner universities and research institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The duration of the project is 36 month, the total budget is 3 491 875 EUR. The project contributes to strengthening the University of Wroc\u0142aw\u2019s research capacity in the fields of democracy and digitalisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viadrina University and the Jean Monnet Chair Redemo, UWr, jointly organize a workshop \u201cTurning the tide: opposing challenges to democracy accross contexts\u201d funded by the German-Polish Foundation, DPWS, on March 26-27 2026 in Frankfurt (Oder).<\/p>\n\n\n
